We’ve been laughing all week about the job opening at UC Santa Cruz for a Grateful Dead Archivist. UCSC won the bidding war against Berkeley for the archive and the university is now looking for someone to help set up the museum/archive. I think it is completely fitting that UCSC is taking this on and bought some Grateful Slug t-shirts to support the effort. Still makes me laugh tho, and...

Seems like an oxymoron. I can still hear my grandmother’s scolding regarding the wearing of dungarees to social events. Then again, she couldn’t understand why I chose UC Davis for college since it was a farming school. :)

From Rabbi David Wolpe
Rabbi Shlomo Carelbach used to say that if he met a person who said “I’m a Catholic” he knew he was a Catholic. If he met a person who said “I’m a Protestant” he knew he was a Protestant. If he met a person who said “I’m a human being” he knew he was a Jew.

Thanks to receiving this lecture from Dib years ago, I grind my own meat now. A few pulses in the food processor is all it takes and I don’t have to worry about the nasty grinders in places like the Cargill factory.
I'm buying this food dehydrator

I initially purchased the Nesco American Harvest FD-1010 Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator for the purpose of drying home grown papyas. My papayas are renowned in my part of the Yukon due largely to the fact that they are...

Once again Larry at The Daily Mirror dug up something interesting from the L.A. Times archives. It’s a 1969 article about–gasp!–a female ranch hand. What’s fascinating is the way that, while discussing how she does things that aren’t traditionally considered female, the reporter describes her in ways that...

Fashion commentary that made me laugh
Great shoes, flattering little black dress, cool leather coat — there’s nothing remarkable here, for sure (although I wouldn’t mind borrowing the Loubs and the jacket), except that it feels like Courtney Love needs a bigger pat on the back than most of us just for completing average, everyday tasks — like successfully getting dressed in something that isn’t made of...
Death Panels without the Panels
by Robert Wright (via Sullivan)
What more is there to say about Sarah Palin’s now-famous claim that President Obama’s health-care plan features “death panels” that will give patients the thumbs up or thumbs down? Just that, if this were Obama’s plan, it would have more in common with our current system than you might think.
In Palin’s fantasy, the death-panel “bureaucrats” were going to pick...
State Park Closures - CA Parklands Newsletter
State Park Closures on the Horizon, But Where and How?
We have received many questions about which state parks will be closed, and when. At this time there is not a list of parks slated for closure. State officials have indicated closures are unlikely to happen until after Labor Day, with a list of the parks targeted for closure released sometime around that date. As soon as a public list is...

Summer project…anyone need any peppers? Seriously, do you?
“Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis is one tough cookie. Last week she opposed subsidizing school lunches for low income children during summer months saying, “Hunger can be a positive motivator.” This is excellent news considering 1 in 5 Missouri kids is living in hunger, so that state is due for a productivity boon.”
